Thanks to all my kind supporters!

I entered the contest and gathered support
did all the things a competitor ought
but the system was not as robust as I thought
and so I've withdrawn from the race.

I had lots of votes and got up to 7th place
which put a smug grin on my silly poet face
but decided to withdraw and show good grace
when the system collapsed 'neath the strain.

So I'd just like to say to all my web friends
it's about how you play not about how it ends
and the message that this little interlude sends
is I'm lucky to have you as pals.

Interesting idea to run a political campaign to win a poetry competition. But after all, every click is equal, and on the internet it’s all about hits and clicks.

  Hi it wasn't anything so lofty as a poetry competition - it was a popularity contest pure and simple LOL
  
  But it was interesting - if you want to see nature red in tooth and claw in competition you should pop along to http://www.authonomy.com - where writers slug it out for the prize of being read and commented on by a professional editor!

    So they have a simple criteria of selection. Popularity. I suppose it's good for those who aim at the popular market.

      Just in case anyone visiting here gets confused.
      
      Ms TwitterWorld - the contest I entered - is a popularity contest for people who are on the social networking site Twitter.
      
      Authonomy is a website run for writers by Harper Collins publishers as an alternative to the traditional slush pile.
      
      Authonomy has a section devoted to Literary Fiction as well as others - it doesn't currently have a Poetry genre although it does have 'Other' as a genre, so poetry can be squeezed in there.
      
      The people who vote on Authonomy are registered members and in the main writers themselves and so it is a slightly 'skewed' population. But like all 'marketplaces' books with a good publicity campaign do well - and that is true whatever the genre.
      
      There is no reason why poetry should not be a popular book - as long as the poems have popular appeal and the book is marketed properly. You may not be aware of a phenomenon named Pam Ayres who did very well as a popular poetess, and Spike Milligan also did very well as UK popular successes with poetry.
      
      There is no reason why poetry should be a rarified intellectual experience and hence my poetry4fun blog.
      
      Personally I am not any more keen on obscure codified snippets of non-communication than the average man on the street is.
      
      I am a fan of the 'say it snappy say it clearly and if possible include a laugh' school of poetry.
      
      I'd rather have fun than impress someone any day of the week and people like a person who entertains more than someone who impresses also - so it is a win win situation I am happy with.
      
      I couldn't impress if I tried in any case, so I'll stick with my strengths and see where it leads and have fun on the journey.
