Pro Tricky part is with all this phone hacking - the papers probably have so much dirt on the politicians that they are shaking in their boots. If the politicos stand up against the papers - they will have all their 'private business' splashed all over the tabloids.
Scarily one of the ways round this is instigating draconian measures which could throw the baby out with the bath water and end up destroying a free press. It is a tricky one. But something must be done - the only questions are what and how?
What does 'freedom of the press' really mean? Do and Say what you like...when you like...and the devil take the hindmost?

Pro If the law worked the way it is supposed to and if the police investigated/prosecuted newspapers properly at the time when they are provided the evidence instead of waiting for hue and cry before doing their jobs - then the papers would know they cannot just say anything without then having to take the consequences.
Sadly the reform of the legal aid system means that nobody unless they are super-rich can afford to defend themselves against falsehoods published by the press.
The laws to protect are in place, but the infra-structure is not doing its job. For whatever reason.
A free press - is crucial to a free society. If the press/media cannot speak out against institutional injustice on the public's behalf - then it becomes little more than a government propaganda machine.
But the press we have today seems to be primarily concerned with taking power rather than championing the man in the street. I think there need to be laws to prevent large corporations owning too many media vehicles. These unelected empires need to be dismantled - if it isn't already too late.

Pro I would not be at all surprised if it turns out that ALL the papers get up to similar nonsense and it is just the NOTW which has been caught with its hands in the cookie jar.
Another of the horrible things papers get up to is printing packs of lies about ordinary members of the public - knowing full well that poorer, vulnerable individuals cannot find legal redress because it is well beyond their budget.
