The Market Square Mark II
With apologies to A.A.Milne.

I had a poem,
A bright new poem,
I read my poem
In the market square.
But nobody listened,
I wanted them to listen,
But they didn't want to listen
And neither did they care.

So I went to the statue standing by the meat van
("Only a tenner for a kilo of pork chops!").
"Please listen to my reading, 'cos I haven't got pork chops!"
But my words didn't grab them, not any of them there.

I had a poem,
And I had another poem,
I took my poems
To the market square.
I did want them to listen,
Just listen for a little bit,
But nobody listened, not anywhere there.

And I stood by the stall where it said, "Meet the authors!"
("Come on! Buy some books! The poets will sign them!").
"Have you got a poem I can read to my dog?"
But I didn't so she left me with the books I'd brought to flog.

I'd had enough,
Yes, I'd had quite enough,
So I didn't take more poems
To the market square;
But I went on twitter,
And good old facebook...
And they listened to my poems
'Most everywhere!

So I'm sorry for the people down by the market square,
I'm sorry for the people down by the meat van,
I'm sorry for the people down near the bookstall,
'Cos they didn't hear my poems, not anywhere there!
